MISSION STATEMENT
At SPEAK ACADEMY, we are dedicated to fostering a dynamic and inclusive learning environment, where every child is encouraged to develop as an inquirer, thinker, and communicator.
Our mission is to provide a bilingual education that empowers students to become globally-minded, proficient communicators in both English and Slovak, promoting international-mindedness, intercultural understanding, and respect for diversity. Through inquiry-based and student-centred learning, we aim to teach students to take ownership of their learning, think critically, and act with purpose.
We are committed to creating a supportive community that celebrates diversity, encourages collaboration, and prepares students to be confident, responsible, and compassionate global citizens. Our school strives to inspire a lifelong passion for learning, and equip our students with the skills and values necessary for success in an interconnected world.

Our School Statement of Values
At our school, we believe that education is a transformative journey that develops knowledgeable, caring and principled young people who are empowered to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. Guided by the mission and values of the International Baccalaureate and the philosophy of the Primary Years Programme (PYP), we nurture students who are active participants in their own learning and who recognise both their potential and their responsibility to others.
We value student agency, inquiry, and meaningful action. We believe that children learn best when they are engaged in authentic learning experiences that connect to their lives, their communities, and the wider world. Through transdisciplinary inquiry, students develop conceptual understanding, critical thinking, and the confidence to take action that makes a positive difference.
Our commitment to service and action is inspired by the educational philosophy of Kurt Hahn, who wrote:
“There are three ways of trying to win the young. There is persuasion, there is compulsion and there is attraction. You can preach at them, that is a hook without a worm; you can say ‘you must volunteer,’ and that is of the devil; and you can tell them, ‘you are needed,’ that appeal hardly ever fails.”
We believe that meaningful action arises not from obligation, but from purpose and belonging. In the spirit of the PYP's emphasis on agency and action, we encourage students to understand that their contributions matter and that they have the capacity to positively impact their communities. When children recognise that they are needed, they develop a genuine commitment to service, collaboration and responsible citizenship.
These qualities are reflected throughout the IB Learner Profile. We strive to develop Inquirers who demonstrate enterprising curiosity, Risk-takers who show courage and resilience, Thinkers who persevere in solving complex problems, and Caring individuals who act with empathy and compassion. Through inquiry-based learning, reflection and authentic challenges, we nurture students who are resilient, self-motivated and committed to lifelong learning.
Additionally, we recognise that wellbeing is fundamental to learning and flourishing.
As a learning community, we seek to create environments where students experience engagement through inquiry, creativity and meaningful challenge. We believe that learning should inspire curiosity, wonder and a sense of possibility. When students become deeply immersed in exploration and discovery, they develop confidence, competence and a lasting love of learning.
Our understanding of wellbeing is modelled on the PERMA framework:
“P is positive emotion, E is engagement, R is relationships, M is meaning and A is accomplishment. Those are the five elements of what free people chose to do. Pretty much everything else is in service of one of or more of these goals. That's the human dashboard.”
These five elements resonate strongly with the holistic philosophy of the IB. We strive to foster positive emotions through a supportive and inclusive culture; engagement through challenging inquiry; relationships through collaboration and intercultural understanding; meaning through purposeful learning and action; and accomplishment through personal growth and achievement. Together, these elements support students in becoming Balanced individuals who understand the importance of intellectual, physical, emotional and social wellbeing.
As a candidate IB World School, we are committed to developing learners who embody the attributes of the Learner Profile: Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open-minded, Caring, Risk-takers, Balanced and Reflective. These attributes are not simply aspirations; they are lived values that guide our interactions, our learning, and our contribution to the world.
Through the PYP, we cultivate internationally minded learners who understand that they are connected to a global community and that their actions have significance. We believe that education should empower young people to inquire thoughtfully, act compassionately and live purposefully. By nurturing curiosity, engagement, wellbeing, compassion and meaningful action, we prepare our students not only for academic success, but also to become active, caring and lifelong contributors to a better world.
